Hat’s Off to Five Businesses that Make Maryland Proud—’s “Top Businesses to Watch”

Maryland may be one of the nation’s smaller states, but we’re bigger than we look when it comes to serving as the home for cutting-edge companies!  Even during these trying economic times, Maryland businesses and organizations have continued to launch, evolve, and grow—and to make Maryland look really good in the process. 

To celebrate the success of Maryland’s business community, we here at have put together a list of the “Top Businesses to Watch.”  The five businesses we selected represent a variety of different industries—from energy to mobile advertising to education—but share at least one common element: a commitment to innovation. 

Companies that made the “Top Businesses to Watch” list include:

UR Solar Power: UR Solar Power, LLC “develops, implements and manages residential solar programs for utilities and national retailers.” The company was named the “Best Green Company” in the Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards in 2011.

Millennial Media: Millennial Media is the "leading independent mobile advertising and data platform powering the app economy." Millennial Media has received numerous awards, most notably honored with the “Mobile Marketing Campaign of the Year” at the American Business Awards in 2011. Additionally, Millennial Media was also named number 74 on the Inc. 500 list, as well as receiving the Mobiletrax “Mobility Award”, and being named the “Mobile Entertainment Winner” at the Future Mobile Awards.

: A healthcare company that uses technology, such as the Internet and smartphone apps, to help reduce healthcare costs and improve disease management outcomes, WellDoc received the National Business Incubation Associaton’s “Outstanding Incubator Graduate Company of the Year” title in 2011. The company was also on the 2011 Forbes “America’s Most Promising Companies” list, which features 100 privately held up-and-coming businesses.

Kloudtrack: Kloudtrack is a technology and solution services company that offers Software-as-a-Service and Cloud computing capabilities, specifically for Governance, Risk and Compliance data and process management. Kloudtrack was recognized as the “Best Information Technology Company” at the 2011 Incubator Company of the Year Awards.

StraighterLine: StraighterLine provides online college courses that are more affordable and convenient than typical university and college classes. Fast Company named StraighterLine one of the "10 Most Innovative Companies in Education" and the company also won the “New Company of the Year” title at the Maryland Incubator Awards.
